Tempting Tropicals for Cooler Climates: Taste of the Tropics

Success at growing tropical fruits in California can sometimes be hard to come by. But there are quite a few tasty warm-climate fruits that can thrive outside the tropics, even near the foggy shores of San Francisco Bay. Bay Area residents enjoy a moderate climate year-round, but the cool, foggy winters can spell death for many tropicals. I came to this conclusion through a process of experimentation. It began one day as I was finishing up a pineapple bought from the local supermarket; instead of throwing out the top, I planted it in a shady spot in the yard. A few weeks later, the top looked appreciably bigger, so I put it in a 2-gallon pot and placed it on a deck that would give it some southern exposure.
