TRADITIONALLY THE COLDEST FORTNIGHT OF winter is the last week in January and the first week in February—which is the current situation as I write this. But winter sun nevertheless shines in the greenhouse now and then, and by afternoon the place might be a little bit warm and spring-like. The unseasonably warm weather in December and January caused a few plants to think spring had sprung. Case in point, the yacon sprouted in December, and so far seems to be surviving the return to winter: 28F nights plus days and weeks without sun.
