Mulch colour manors to strawberries

A controlled study of six mulch films in strawberry production found that marketable yield weight was 16 per cent greater with a silver-over-black, non-metallized mulch film versus the typical black film many growers normally use. The study also included two red films, which improved yields five and 11 per cent compared to black film, as well as blue and white-over-black films. The study involved Camarosa strawberries at a fresh-market grower in Virginia. The yield increase with the silver-black coextruded film was apparent by the second week of harvesting and extended through the rest of the six-week harvest in which berries were hand-picked twice per week from the last week of April to the first week of June. The yield improvement with the red films was not evident until the third and fourth weeks.
