Energy-saving greenhouse coverings which have a different UV transmittance to glass can have a large influence on plant growth, diseases and in particular, insects. New materials which are being developed for greenhouse coverings can be energy efficiency but their light transmittance can have significant consequences on crop development and on diseases and insects. Specifically, it is the degree to which the material allows the transmission of ultraviolet radiation which causes the effect. UV radiation is comprised of UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. The ozone layer in the earth's atmosphere absorbs the harmful UV-C radiation and some of the UV-B radiation which can cause skin cancer. Depending on the greenhouse covering material used, UV-B and UV-A radiation will still enter the greenhouse.
