A greenhouse which produces its own water for irrigation using as little energy as possible could become a common sight in warm, dry regions in the future. Although still at an early stage the Watergy greenhouse is at the heart of a European-wide research project which has been set up not only to look at food production but also to see how water can be treated and reused as energy efficiently as possible. Developed by researchers at Wageningen University, the Netherlands, the Technical University ofBerlin and the Cajamar experimental station in Almeria, Spain, the first prototype was set up in Spain where water is a serious issue for greenhouse growers.
