Stacking boxes and crates high onto pallets is not the best of tasks. Customary automated systems, with more palletisers and supply lines, are expensive so two cucumber growers got together and started their own project. They have developed a processing line with one central robot which stacks all kinds of grades and packaging materials. "On a daily basis we can stack 40 to 50 tons of cucumbers and pallets are getting higher, sometimes reaching 2.30 metres. That's a huge burden for the workers. A solution just had to be found even if it wasn't going to be profitable," said Rinus van Mullekom, a Dutch grower of cucumbers and autumn tomatoes.
