Those pretty pictures showing wide expanses of fields, lush with row after row of leafy greens, don't show everything. Not visible, and easy to get mixed in during harvest, are the not-so-pretty foreign objects that can also reside in the field. Rocks, insects, frogs, pieces of wood, litter — all can make their way to the processing line. That's where optical sorting equipment comes in. "Anything you can find in the field is something you can expect — plastics, pieces of wood and also foreign objects like insects — that's a big one," said Karel Strubbe, area sales manager based in Denver for Best Sorting.
