Ohio, Shadowing Eastern NeighborPennsylvania, Is Embarking on a MajorOil and Gas Expansion, Mostly in theUtica Shale Formation: Scholars ReportThat The State Has the Possibility ofBeing a Hydrocarbon Exporter
The eastern third of Ohio, closest to Pennsylvania, contains a portion of the Utica Shale formation, anarea expected to yield the most dry gas, natural gasliquids (NGLs), and crude oil in the state. Thisbroad area, along with the Marcellus formation, isjump-starting Ohio’s oil and gas boom. Eventhough development of Utica in Ohio came a bit later than the state’s Marcellus Shale production, more wells now penetrate Utica and in a largergeographical area than anticipated, according to arecent report, An Analysis of The Economic Potential ForShale Formations in Ohio, prepared by scholars fromCleveland State University, The Ohio StateUniversity, and Marietta College1. “For the first timein over 100 years, Ohio finds itself on the thresholdof not only being self-sufficient in the production ofoil and gas, but also possibly even being ahydrocarbon exporter,” the report said.
