Gensler Wins Senate Vote to Become Top Commodities Regulator after Committing to Fully Regulate 'Dark' Markets; Obama Names Bart Chilton to New Term
The Senate on 5/19/09 voted 88-6 to confirm Gary Gensler as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). President Obama nominated Gensler last December to lead the five-member commission, and in March the Senate Agriculture Committee backed his confirmation. Sens. Bernie Sanders (l-Vt.) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) had placed "holds" on Gensler for opposing regulation of derivatives when he worked in the Clinton-era Treasury Department and, in their opinion, thereby enabling market manipulation and excess speculation.
