Let the Market Decide the Feasibility of Waste Heat Power Generation by Gas Pipeline Systems, Argues MidAmerican Energy Pipeline Group

The recent FERC Energy Efficiency of Natural Gas Infrastructure and Operations Conference (AD09-11) provided a forum for, among other industry representatives, Robert Checketts, vice president of operations, IT and engineering, at Kern River Gas Transmission Co., to explain to regulators why waste heat recovery operations may not be viable on many natural gas pipeline systems — low equipment utilization, high capital costs and low power prices. Checketts spoke at the conference last month on behalf of the MidAmerican Energy Pipeline Group, comprised of Kern River and Northern Natural Gas Co., regarding those two companies' efforts to initiate economically viable waste heat recovery projects.
