Department of Energy Budget Request Addresses Host of Interrelated Challenges; Request by Interior Department Includes New Fees and Taxes for Offshore Oil and Gas Industry

Energy Secretary Steven Chu on 5/7/09 presented a fiscal year (FY) 2010 budget request of $26.4 billion for the Department of Energy (DOE). Chu highlighted "the [Obama] Administration's commitment to transformational discoveries, breakthrough science, and innovative technologies in the effort to secure reliable, clean, safe and secure energy, create new jobs, and fight climate change." While the budget makes important investments in "energy independence" and job creation, it cuts back on programs "that don't work as well or are no longer needed."
