Trendy bouquets for spring and summer brides: Canadian florists and industry experts offer tips and advice for that special day

Spring is here and with summer just around the corner, florists are gearing up for a busy season with couples ready to tie the knot and say, "I do." So what styles of bouquets and what flowers are brides looking for this year? According to Jolanta Luczak, designer and wedding consultant at Tidy's Flowers in Toronto, today's brides are interested in using more garden flowers in their bouquets. "They like garden perennials like peonies, hydrangeas, plain tulips, and with just one type of flower or monochromatic...tied nicely with ribbon or a covered stem with other leaves," she says. "Hand-tied is the most popular bouquet style." Debby Mercer, a Master Florist and owner of Elysion Floral Antiques & Gifts in Jasper, Alta., agrees with Luczak and saysthe trend these days is away from the formal roses type of bouquet and instead to the "gardeny" types of flowers. Hand-tied bouquets are quite popular, she adds, as well as bright-coloured flowers. "Living in a national park (Jasper) we get asked for awild flower look relatively often. It's not so formal (as it used to be)," she says. "It's actually quite rare I'm asked to do more of a formal type of bouquet. People are looking for really different stuff. If they're going to go beyond the hand-tied, they want something different. We did one bouquet that was actually held in the middle and it was almost like a wreath.
