Natural Gas-Dependent California Will Need Sufficient Pipeline Capacity, According to Policy Report Issued by California Energy Commission

Since natural gas is the state's "fuel of choice," California needs more pipeline capacity and policies that support construction, the California Energy Commission (CEC) declared in its 2009 Integrated Energy Policy Report (IEPR): Final Commission Report. California is the second largest natural gas consumer of all the states, accounting for more than 10% of total national demand. California must work closely with the Western states "to ensure development of a natural gas transmission and storage system that has sufficient capacity and alternative supply routes to overcome any disruption in the system, such as weather-related line freezes and pipeline breaks." Natural gas is the cleanest fuel and will continue to be a significant energy source for the foreseeable future, according to the CEC. The recommended expansion of gas infrastructure would allow the state to tap into delivery of the increasing domestic shale gas production and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.
