Welded, Chamfered studs help forge shop get a better handle on productivity and savings

To move heated forgings between operations, workers must grasp the forged parts with tongs. To do so, they commonly add tong holds to each billet by "drawing out" some of the part's own metal during production. Several years ago, Moline Forge, of Moline, IL, began replacing these tong holds with chamfered metal studs welded onto billets using the stud-welding process. This significantly reduced costs and increased productivity.
