Oared Square Rigged Warships in the Eighteenth-century Mediterranean

In his article ‘Paddle Wheels for Sailing Menof- War’, Joseph Eliav touched on the fitting of oars to sailing ships of small to moderate size, generally one or two decked frigates.1 A wellknown example of this type of ship is the frigate Charles Galley, a painting of which, signed by Willem van de Velde, is held by the Greenwich National Maritime Museum.
