Valuing forestry: FOREST MARKET REPORT

Since my August article, there has been a flurry of development on the pohtical front. Forestry is a devolved matter and each country is therefore following its own course. It is not the function of this article to analyse this in depth, but the newsof major change in England has excited comment in the press, much of which has implied that changing the ownership of the woods would damage them. Part of this concern may arise from an oft-held misconception that all woods belong to the FC. In fact, FCEngland owns only 18% of the woods in that country; about 40% of the coniferous forest, but only 7% of the broadleaved woodland. Given the high regard in which the landscape of England is held, the private owner must be doing something right.
