Ukraine has a 2,775 km coastline and more than I million hectares of inland water bodies, including about 800,000 hectares of reservoirs, 122,500 hectares of ponds and 86,500 hectares of lakes. However, the volume of aquaculture production today is only estimated to be about 20,000 tonnes per year - catering for less than 5 per cent of the country's total fish consumption.According to official estimates, the total market for fish in the Ukraine, including the volume of illegal fishing and import supplies, is worth about US$ 1.5 billion per year, and amounts to about 600,000 tonnes of product. Despite this, the aquaculture industry in the Ukraine is currently in stagnation - producers struggle to compete with cheap imported products and therefore the volume of production has not risen for the last seven years.
