摘要

While society must make every effort to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, tree-planting can also play a role by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The potential of woodlands to do this is widely recognised. Woodlands in the UK currently remove about 12Mt CO_2 per year (about 2% of the UK's GHG emissions) and store around 150Mt C (equivalent to 550Mt CO_2), as well as, a large quantity in the soils. In the UK, an authoritative assessment of the scientific evidence, by Sir David Read, in his 2009 report, Combating climate change - a role for UK forests, concluded that creating new woodlands in the UK can make a significant and cost-effective contribution to our efforts to remove the most important GHG by volume, carbon dioxide, from the atmosphere.
