TWO years have already passed since Aquaculture UK 2010 and I look back with pride at our achievements since my first experience of Aviemore all those months ago. When I first started with Aquatic Hygiene back in 2009 I was hoping that my ten years' experience of Quality & Technical Management of a large smoked salmon producer supplying the demanding UK & European retail sector would prove useful to the harvesting and primary processing sector. Never did I imagine the biosecurity benefits it would bring to the wellboats and hatcheries of our key Scottish customers. The challenges of potential biosecurity risks are very similar to those found in food safety, and hopefully my practical experience has proved useful to the many diligent husbandry professionals who farm throughout mainland Scotland, the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland. Many of them cannot be with us in Aviemore, so I hope they are able to read these few words of my appreciation for the help and support they have so kindly given me asthey patiently taught me the basics of salmon husbandry.
