FEN and DANDY!

Using his 'Birdeye' in the Cambridge Fens, Jason Cooper has to keep an eye on the birds. Wicken Fen in the Village of Wicken, Cambridgeshire was acquired by the National. Trust in 1901 and a further two parcels of land were added in 2000 giving a total of 1500 acres. Site of one of Britain's oldest nature reserves, the fen was largely drained during the war but was returned to wet grassland in the last decade and is an ideal site for waders in the winter months. For the last 20 years of the 19th century there was a brickyard in full operation and the remains of the kiln can still be seen. The redoubtable task of fen clearance now falls to Jason Cooper (RJ. Cooper) a former machine operator on building sites who took over the National Trust contractseven years ago when the previous incumbent retired.
