A couple of years ago, I undertook a relascope survey for a client. I set out and navigated to something like 600 plots in1300ha of woodland, and I used the traditional pad and paper. Then each evening, instead of relaxing in my hotel, I sat and transcribed the field notes into an Excel spreadsheet. It took ages. Down below, outside my open window, I could hear the sound of other guests eating steaks, quaffing ale and exchanging ribaldries... Oh, how I longed to be with them. But instead, several hours each night were spent cross-referenc-inq and inputting data.
