Wood for fuel: the UPM Tilhill view

The recent upsurge in interest in renewable energy in the UK, and the increasing number of wood-fuelled installations used in the commercial, domestic, and public sector has resulted in a rapidly expanding UK market for woodfuel. Biomass can comprise any of the following wood elements: solid roundwood, branches; needles; stumps, brash and deadwood; and can be harvested from conifer forests and broadleaved woodlands, even urban and roadside trees. Forest owners can enhance their profitability by utilising this by-product of their commercial crops for the woodfuel market. Good woodland management also enables owners to feed a sustainable supply of biomass into the industry.
