Making waves:Growing global industry keeps FAD aquaculture officer on the move

Alessandro Lovatelli, of the Fishery Resources Office (Aquaculture) of the FAO, is currently focused on the development of offshore farming, the transfer of farming technologies, and resources management. A biological oceanographer educated at Southampton University, and then Plymouth, he has worked across the industry. He first joined FAO in 1987, embarking on a career that has taken him to, among other places, Mexico, Vietnam and Somalia, as well as Europe. He began his latest stint at FAO in 2001, and his geographical coverage is global, with a special interest in the North Africa and Near East region. Lovatelli chaired the fifth Offshore Mariculture Conference, held in Naples last year.
