It may be brave to conjecture that renewed interest in tree planting by farmers will be the result of the absorption of the Woodland Grant Scheme into whatever agriculture stewardship scheme is finalised. But, should this indeed be the result, it would be timely to recall some of the learning points from the planting schemes of previous decades - particularly on fertile lowland sites.Weed control on less fertile or smaller sites can normally be pretty minimalist, using a combination of knapsack applied glyphosate or Kerb around trees in tubes. But on fertile ex-arable or improved grassland sites where perennial weeds can run riot, there are at least two major weed control themes that need to be acknowledged for hassle free establishment on the larger plantations.
