Anna Brown of Tree Health Division, Forest Research looks at Red band needle blight and its impact on UK pines. Red band needle blight, so called because of the colourful symptoms it shows on pine, is caused by the fungus Dothistroma pini (sometimes also known as Mycosphaerella pini or Dothistroma septospora). This blight is an economically important disease which causes premature needle defoliation, resulting in loss of yield and, in severe cases, tree death. Red band can infect a number of coniferous hosts, but pine is particularly susceptible.
