摘要

New technology is being used to help identify areas of Scots pine forest at risk fromresin-top disease as Darren G. Moseley and Steve Woodward of the University of Aberdeen, and David R. Miller of the Macaulay Institute report. Traditional forest disease management has relied on the forester having a trained eye for particular symptoms and identifying areas prone to attack. However, pressures and demands on personnel time prevent regular visits to forest stands meaning that new outbreaks can cause serious damage before remedial action is possible. Although the modern-day forester has anumber of technological tools available to aid decision-making, those appropriate for the management of disease are limited. The history, and evidence, of particular diseases causing problems in some areas implies that suitable management action is required, for which relevant tools would have a ready use.
