Spending for inpatient care across OECD countries accounts for almost 30% of overall healthcare expenditures, with outpatient care consuming another 33% (OECD 2013). Although spending growth rates have slowed in recent years, spending is still increasing. It is anticipated that the cost pressures of GDP spending on healthcare will continue to grow as the world's population ages. Spending increases are counterbalanced by global life expectancy increase of about six years in the last 20 years, which has been attributed to advances in healthcare (GBD 2013 Mortality and Causes of Death Collaborators 2015).
