TWISTED TIMBER: Rare Granite State tornado leaves havoc and habitat in its 50-mile wake, prompting landowners to move quickly to salvage valuable timber
Meteorologist Mike Cempa of the National Weather Service in Maine was watching the Doppler radar on the morning of July 24 when he spotted the signature of a twister in Deerfield. The presumed funnel remained on the radar for more than an hour, movingnorth by northeast across Epsom and Pittsfield, Barnstead, Alton, and half a dozen more towns all the way to Effingham near the Maine border. "This was the largest tornado in New England history at 50 miles long," Cempa said. A survey of the sectors hit by the storm revealed trees lying in a northwesterly orientation across the track of the storm, indicating the presence of a funnel. Peak winds were estimated to be between 111 and 130 mph.
