Nowadays more than 80 % of the high grade zinc is produced hydrometallurgically. This is obvious, because the hydrometallurgical plants are more simple and less cost-intensive than the pyrometallurgical ones, but this advantage is unfortunately connected with a disadvantage, namely the formation of waste products, especially the iron-containing waste-products jarosite and goethite.As the jarosite-process is more widespread than the goethite process, more of jarosite is produced as a waste product, which is deposited into dumps until now. The dumping costs for jarosite as a supervision-obligatory material are rather high, differing from country to country, and therefore the dumping of jarosite becomes an urgent problem because the jarosite quantities on the other hand, which have to be deposited, are also very high.
