To determine long-term results following total ankle arthroplasty using cementless, porous-coated, congruent-contact, mobile-bearing total ankle replacements manufactured with two designs, shallow and deep sulcus Forty ankles in 38 patients had cementless, porous-coated, congruent-contact, mobile-bearing total ankle replacements implanted from December 1981 to December 1988. All 40 implants had a talar component with a shallow sulcus design and a central fin. Twenty-one ankles had posttraumatic arthritis, 9 had rheumatoid arthritis, 7 had osteoarthritis, and 3 had a failed fusion. The mean age of this group of patients was 55 years (range, 21-89), their mean weight was 73 kg, and follow-up ranged from 2-20 years with a mean of 12 years.
