BASF has developed a plastic engine mount for the Mercedes-Benz GL Class SUV. The firm claims a world first for the component, which is almost a third lighter than the aluminium casting it replaces. Injection mouldings have been used as torque support links but these are only used to counteract the engine's tilting movment - they do not have to take the weight of the engine. BASF said: "Compared to the previous aluminium support the plastic part offers improved acoustic properties, better thermal insulating characteristics and a weight advantage, while being able to withstand the same load."
