The Canadian Food Inspection Agency detected melamine contamination in imports from China last year before the problem was well known and that experience led the agency to step up its monitoring of imported foods and ingredients, Johanne Beaulieu, the agency's director of consumer protection, revealed in a conference presentation earlier this month.Beaulieu, who was speaking at the Dairy Farmers of Canada annual policy convention, Feb. 4, in Ottawa, said the border inspection process would be more effective if domestic farm and food industry groups suggested products CFIA should focus on.
