FDA's Acheson stresses importance of traceability pilot projects

FDA has a major role in facilitating food traceability, but the agency must tread carefully before imposing a mandatory system on the industry, David Acheson, associate commissioner for food, warned during a three-hour forum sponsored by IBM last Wednesday on Capitol Hill. Acheson declined to respond to a question about the mandatory implementation of USD A's National Animal Identification System (NAIS), but he said, "I don't honestly think [traceability] can be done voluntarily on the FDA side."
