Six senators, (five Democrats and one Republican), criticized two federal agencies last week for not flcting to restrict phthalates and bisphenol A in consumer products, asserting that even when the risks of harm from chemicals are small, the agencies should still err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to children. The Senate Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs, Insurance and Automotive Safety held a hearing May 14 to gather information and improve Congress's understanding of the current science surrounding BPA and phthalates. Both have been linked to adverse health effects.
