IRON ORE COSTS PRICES OF IRON ORE AND STEEL

The recent history of iron ore prices has been characterised by high price volatility. A graphic illustration of the extent of the price changes experienced in the iron ore market is provided in chart 7, which illustrate first the significant jump in iron ore prices occurred between 2004 and 2006, at the same time in which Chinese crude steel production jumped from 269 million tonnes in 2004 to 422 million tonnes in 2006. The vast increase in demand, along with the creation of a spot market propelled the price of iron ore and increased the margin on sales of the miners to fabulous levels.
