VII. LUDWIGIA SEDOIDES (ONAGRACEAE) IN MALESIA

In the spring of 2005 M.M.J. van Balgooy (L) observed and photographed an interesting water plant that had nearly completely covered the surface of his pond in Amlapura, East Bali. The diamond-shaped leaves in a dense rosette resembled those of Trapa,but the flowers were large and bright yellow, while Trapa has small and white to reddish suffused ones. With some searching in the literature, surfing on the internet, and writing to some Malesian friends, Dr. R. Kiew (KEP) came to the relief: Ludwigiasedoides (Bonpl.) H. Kara (Onagraceae). It is usually erroneously cited as Ludwigia sedioides (Humb. & Bonpl.) H. Hara, but the epithet is derived from Sedum, hence 'sedoides', and the authorship of the basionym is Bonpland in Humboldt & Bonpland.
