Oleochemicals: EU fatty alcohol buyers hit by antidumping duties for imports from Malaysia, India, and Indonesia

Small fatty alcohol buyers in Europe voiced apprehension about the European Commission's (EC) recently announced plan to impose new surcharges for imports of fatty alcohols originating from India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The move is deemed to keep prices of the material at elevated levels amid supply tightness, likely forcing smaller buyers to withdraw from the market. The Commission launched in Aug 2010 an investigation into antidumping of the material, covering the period 1 Jul 2009-30 Jun 2010, in response to formal complaints lodged by Germany-based fatty alcohol producers Cognis, now part of BASF, and Sasol Olefins & Surfactants.
