Price & market trends: North America: US Propane Dehydrogenation (PDH) loses allure as oil prices fall

Crude oil prices fell, resulting in a series of events that has made propane dehydrogenation (PDH) less preferred in the US. Companies are planning to build nine PDH facilities in North America to offset the shortage of propylene in the US. Of the proposed projects, three will push through, while two have already been cancelled. Decisions on four others are still pending. The production of PDH in the US had declined because companies started to become more attracted to ethane over heavier feedstocks in their crackers. Lighter feedstocks generate less propylene.
