AFS Subunit Services: We're Here to Serve You!

The American Fisheries Society (AFS) Department of Subunit Services has a number of resources and services available to prepare subunit officers for their terms and to assist them in their leadership roles. According to Subunit Services Manager Richard Stephens, it is important for officers to have a close relationship with the manager of subunit services so they know about and can use the resources available at AFS headquarters and can maintain complete and accurate files. Each subunit (Committee, task forces, Sections, Divisions, Chapters, and student subunits) has an individual file for every year it has existed. Each year, numerous subunits request historical documents, bylaws, and procedural manuals and information that officers have misplacedor that only longgone volunteers have or know. The AFS headquarters' file holds past and current newsletters, bylaw amendments, officer listings with addresses, meeting dates and locations, and financial statements, Since AFS officers are volunteers, itis a burden for them and the subunit to keep all this information intact and references for future officers, Thus, AFS headquarters serves as an archive.
