Nutrient Mining in Agro-climatic Zones of Madhya Pradesh

The cropping pattern in the state of Madhya Pradesh (M.P.) is dominated by soybean, rice, maize in Kharif and wheat, gram and mustard in Rabi. In recent years the productivity of major crops(viz., wheat, soybean, rice, mustard and maize)in M.P. is below national everage productivity which may be attributed to very low fertiliser use (47 kg NPK/ha) as compared to national fertiliser consumption (90 kg NPK/ha). The fertiliser nutrient use and removal by different crops during 1998-99 have shown that there is a negative balance of 1.09 million tonnes of NPK and 0.05 million tonnes of S in the state. The balance of NPK and S is negative in all agro-climatic zones except Nimar valley zone. Organic manures and biofertilisers available in the state have potential to fill up the physical gap of N, P and S. But having utilized all the organics, a negative balance of 0.6 to 0.7 million tones of potassium (K_2O) still exists in the state. Since the soils of different agro-climatic zones of MP. are medium to high in vavailable potassium, this physical gap can not be considered as a serious problem at the present level of crop production, but in years ahead, it may be crucial if proper management strategies for K are not adopted in various agro-climatic zones of M.P.More acute deficiencies of other in the future are expected if remedial measures are not taken to fulfil this nutrient gap.
