The fertiliser has been and will continue to be the king input in achieving self sufficiency in foodgrain production in the country despite its almost trebling its population after independence. nevertheless fertilisers can be made more efficient and profitable if the recommended package of agronomic practices for a crop are practised. These include: choice of variety, optimum date of sowing, proper primary and secondary tillage, desrired plant population, proper water management, effective weed control and proper time and method of fertilizer application. Choice of a plantnutrient could be important in some crops. Furthermore, the recent decline in rice and wheat reported from some regions in the country have again refocussed the attention on organic manures, including FYM, compost, crop residues, green manures etc. which not only have synergistic effects with fertilisers and hep make them more efficient but also improve soil physical and biological properties and thereby help in making highly productive cereasl-cereal cropping systems sustainable. Biofertilisers have also come in the focus in recent years and can be used for meeting part of nitrogen requirement of crops. Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms also have a role in increasing the availability fo native and applied rock phosphate. This may permit a better use of indigenous low grade rock phosphate. In teraction effects of various components of agronomic package and organic manures have been briefly discussed. Available results indicate that integrated plant nutrient system (IPNS) coupled with recommended agronomic practices is the key to successful agriculture.
