摘要

No doubt about it--it was the house that led me to create the vegetable garden. I believe that gardens should look comfortable with their surroundings, rather than appear superimposed on the landscape. We live in an 18th-century Pennsylvania farmhouse. Since farmhouses and vegetable gardens just naturally belong together, this garden was a logical beginning for us. This isn't a novel idea. Gardening, since its beginning, has largely had a functional intent. Early American settlers brought the concept of the foursquare garden with them from Europe. In fact, the four-square style of garden, which we've adopted, is appropriate to the age of our house. It's likely that our home's original inhabitants had a vegetable garden much like ours.
