REACH authorisation or substitution of TRI? Safechem looks at future options after entry of Trichloroethylene (TRI) into ANNEX XIV of REACH

Trichloroethylene (TRI) has been added to Annex XIV of the REACH regulation on April 21, 2013. As a result of this inclusion the use of the solvent will only be possible after the sunset date (April 21, 2016) if authorisation is granted. Hence all users are required to evaluate suitable alternatives to substitute TRI before the sunset date. As a complete solution provider for customised cleaning processes with solvents, SAFECHEM Europe, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow), assists customers in this important evaluation process. For applications in which TRI is indispensable and cannot be substituted, SAFECHEM and Dow are in preparation to apply for authorisation of the substance for the use in industrial surface cleaning in 'closed' machines.
