Pamela Harper is a revered figure in the gardening world. Author of a number of books, including Designing with Perennials, and the recipient of the Horticultural Writing Award of the American Horticultural Society and awards from the Garden Writers Association of America, Harper began gardening in England in 1955, when she and her husband transformed an acre of waterlogged clay and flint into a garden with hundreds of different plants, including 200 kinds of heather. Her first book—about that garden—was published in 1972. Transplanted in 1968 from her native ground in England to three different sites in the United States, she now works her sandy Virginia soil and continues to grace the horticultural world with her words, her photographs, and hergarden. Pamela may be best known for her expertise with perennials, but here she explains her current reliance on the colors of foliage, bark, and berries of woody species.
