摘要

THE LATVIAN government has banned the sale of detergents with a phosphate content higher than 0.5%, effective June 1, 2010. This measure is intended to combat the problem of eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, as well as reducing the country's water purification costs. Several European Union member states have already restricted the use of phosphates in detergents, but Latvia is the first Baltic state to implement such a law.
