Toronto witnessed the outbreak of SARS in early 2003. Aside from health concerns, economic recovery was also top on the agenda. Both the mainstream and the ethnic economies were hard hit and every business owner was earnestly hoping for a speedy recovery. An interesting phenomenon among Chinese restaurants happened: those located in Toronto's suburbs rebounded very quickly, while those anchored at the traditional Chinatown were very pessimistic in their recovery prospects. According to what was reported in the press, almost all businesses at Chinatowns had to endure much longer periods to get back to normal.
