Sowing into stubble can present problems particularly in areas with high stubble loads. This article details a Grains Research and Development Corporation-funded project which saw the development of a new inter-row seeder to overcome many of the problems associated with sowing into stubble and which could remove the necessity to burn? stubble in high-rainfall areas. Southern Farming Systems has purpose-built an inter-row seeder in a bid to develop alternatives to stubble burning in the high-rainfallareas. Named the 'Southern Seeder" the machine was developed by extension agronomist Rohan Wardle in association with Southern Farming Systems members and local Victorian businesses Watson Farm Machinery, Knuckey's Press Wheels and Harry Green Seed Boxes, as part of a National Landcare Programme and Southern Farming Systems' Grains Research and Development Corporation-funded stubble retention project.
