Hydatid disease is a well-known issue for sheep producers, causing losses to the meat industry through offal downgrades and condemnations, and potential human health impacts. But it is also a significant problem for beef cattle producers throughout eastern Australia, costing at least $1.2 million annually in lost production. Beef processors also lose almost $500,000 each year from hydatid infected carcases being downgraded and condemned.
