Findings from a pilot study suggest the development of dual-purpose canola (for oilseed production and grazing) is feasible. More research is being carried out to test a wider selection of suitable varieties in a range of environments to maximise thepotential benefits of such a system. The use of winter canola for oilseed production and livestock grazing could enhance the overall profitability of canola production significantly and add improved flexibility to mixed farming enterprises in some high-rainfall areas of southern Australia. During 2004 and 2005, CSIRO Plant Industry carried out a pilot study in the cool, high-rainfall area near Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, to investigate the acceptability to sheep of winter canola (Brassica napus) varieties with improved blackleg resistance; the amount and quality of biomass that could be produced for grazing; and the capacity of the crop for re-growth and grain yield following heavy grazing.
