Japanese university sets ISO14001 example for education sector

Not only the smokestack industries pollute - universities do too. So Chiba University in Japan set about reducing the environmental impact of chemical waste from laboratory experiments, plus waste and energy use from everyday campus life, by implementing an ISO 14001-certified EMS. Caring for the environment is not just for smokestack industries. The most unsuspected organizations can be significant polluters - even universities. For example, many laboratory experiments carried out in higher education establishments produce hazardous chemical and other waste materials - and the Nishi-Chiba Campus at Chiba University, Chiba, Japan, is a case in point. It is also an interesting case study of how to reduce such environmental impacts, and an example to others.
